The first competition of the season is always fun! You get to see how your training is going, what is working when you want it and what issues still need attention.

After a long warm up (here they did 2×4 minutes which is very different than my experience in France with 2×2 minutes), we began scoring. Everything went well except for a broken nock which I might have shot a few times before seeing the crack (!) Finally figured it out in round 7 of the second half.
I wish I could see all my ends plotted right now, because my groupings were quite good. And overall, the results match what I have been training. The broken nock means I probably need to go back to shooting on tri-spots again.
Anyone who is trying to get back into high level performance knows that you cannot rush it. Patience is the most important skill right now. It might be boring to train like this, but it will pay off. The millimetres required to jump my score are completely doable. The weird arrows (for me that means the seven arrows which landed in red and are circled below) were all explainable. That seems to be OK as I really know my next move…
Now, I shift into some physical focus until the end of the year. Tomorrow begins the weight training specific to archery and improving the precision of my shot –> this is for bow arm stability while at anchor.
To all those preparing for their first competition of the season, be very strict on your equipment checks, especially your arrows after every end. Stay warm. And the on the day after, make sure you rest… instead of trying to climb up a tree to rescue a cat (yup, that was fun and yes he is ok).
*** The red 7 at 3 o’clock was the broken nock’s last shot before cracking. The two high arrows at 12 o’clock were badly timed breaths. The two low 5-6 o’clock were bow arm drops (I am a leftie). And the 9 o’clock was a release that decided to be a bit wild, Some of the holes were from the warm up rounds.
–> nothing strange, just things I need to remind myself of while thinking about other parts of my shot too.
Happy training.
